Not a Sauna: What Is a Rice Bran Enzyme Bath?

“Is an enzyme bath basically the same as a sauna?”

This is one of the most common questions we receive from first-time guests at KOH.

Both experiences involve warmth and perspiration, but a rice bran enzyme bath is very different from a sauna.

At KOH Hakko Retreat, we use 100% rice bran.

The warmth is created through natural fermentation, rather than by directly heating the rice bran with electricity or gas.

Heated Air vs. Being Surrounded by Warm Rice Bran

In a sauna, your body is surrounded by heated air.

In a rice bran enzyme bath, you lie down while naturally warmed rice bran is gently placed around and over your body.

Many guests describe the experience as a warmth that feels deeper than surface heat, with the body remaining comfortably warm even after leaving the rice bran.

Although the rice bran bath itself is short, some guests continue to perspire during the cool-down period and even into the evening.

This lingering sensation of warmth and continued perspiration is one of the experiences that many guests find noticeably different from a sauna.

The Rice Bran Bath Itself Is About 15 Minutes

For international guests, KOH offers a 120-minute private wellness experience.

However, the rice bran bath itself lasts approximately 15 minutes.

You may wonder, “Only 15 minutes?”

Although the bath is short, most guests perspire significantly during the experience, and many continue to perspire during the cool-down period afterwards. Some guests also tell us that the perspiration continues into the evening.

Before the bath, we encourage hydration and serve an enzyme drink to help prepare you for the experience.

Our staff will also check how you are feeling and guide you according to your condition that day.

Shower, Then Take Time to Cool Down

After the rice bran bath, you can wash off the rice bran in the shower inside your private room.

KOH provides ReFa shower facilities and carefully selected amenities, so there is no need to rush after the bath.

Once you have showered, you can move to your private relaxation area and allow your body to cool down gradually.

Many guests continue to perspire during this time.

For this reason, KOH provides a lightweight, absorbent bathrobe specially selected for comfort around the shoulders, allowing you to relax without feeling weighed down while the robe absorbs continued perspiration.

At KOH, this cool-down period is not simply waiting time — it is an important part of the experience.

A Different Kind of Warmth from a Sauna

If you enjoy saunas, a rice bran enzyme bath offers another way to experience warmth and perspiration.

Instead of sitting in a heated room, your body is surrounded directly by naturally fermented rice bran.

Guests often describe this as a gentler, deeper-feeling warmth compared with hot air.

If you do not enjoy the intense heat or enclosed atmosphere of a sauna, you may also find that a rice bran enzyme bath feels very different.

Everyone experiences heat differently, so please let our staff know if you have any concerns or preferences before your session.

100% Rice Bran, Naturally Fermented

The warmth at KOH is not created by simply setting a machine to a specific temperature.

Because we rely on natural fermentation, the condition of the rice bran changes from day to day.

Our trained staff carefully maintain the rice bran every day, checking its temperature, moisture, and overall condition.

This hands-on care is an essential part of creating each KOH experience.
