Morning Rice Bran Enzyme Bath in Okinawa: Daily Care Behind KOH’s Natural Fermentation

Why Does a Rice Bran Enzyme Bath Feel Warm?
A rice bran enzyme bath is very different from a conventional hot bath.
At KOH Hakko Retreat, we use 100% rice bran, and the warmth does not come from directly heating it with electricity or gas.
Instead, the heat is created through natural fermentation.
Because fermentation is a natural process, the condition of the rice bran changes from day to day. Temperature, moisture and the overall condition of the rice bran must be carefully observed and maintained.
About 2.5 Hours of Care, Every Day
At KOH, our trained staff spend approximately 2.5 hours every day caring for and maintaining the rice bran.
The experience you have during your visit is supported by work that continues even when no guests are in the bath.
Our staff carefully check the condition of the rice bran and prepare it for the following sessions.
Unlike a system where a temperature can simply be set on a machine, naturally fermented rice bran requires regular hands-on care.
For us, that daily care is an important part of the KOH experience.
Why Try a Morning Session?
At KOH, the early morning is often one of the times when guests can experience the warmth of the rice bran particularly well.
Because the heat comes from natural fermentation, the condition is never exactly the same every day.
Our staff check the rice bran carefully and prepare it before welcoming each guest.
If you would like to experience the warmth of a freshly prepared rice bran bath, a morning appointment can be a particularly enjoyable choice.
Only 15 Minutes in the Rice Bran
Our first-time experience lasts 120 minutes, but you do not spend the entire session inside the rice bran.
The rice bran bath itself usually lasts around 15 minutes.
Afterwards, you can shower, get ready with our amenities and ReFa facilities, and relax in your own private room.
This also makes a morning visit easy to include before sightseeing, shopping or other plans in Naha.
FAQ
Is the rice bran always hottest in the morning?
Because the heat comes from natural fermentation, the temperature and condition vary from day to day. At KOH, mornings tend to be one of the times when guests can experience the warmth particularly well.
Can I visit after breakfast?
We recommend avoiding a session immediately after a large meal and allowing some time before your appointment.
Can I go sightseeing afterwards?
Yes. Showers, skin-care, shampoo/treatment, towels, robes and ReFa products are available, so you can get ready before continuing your day in Okinawa.
Do I stay in the rice bran for the full 120 minutes?
No. The rice bran bath itself is approximately 15 minutes. The rest of your visit includes showering, changing and private relaxation time. This is your cool-down time, and many guests continue to perspire after the bath. We therefore recommend relaxing in the absorbent bathrobe provided while your body gradually cools down.
